Profmed – Their South African Hospital Plans Explained
If you are looking into having healthcare then you should consider having hospital plans in South Africa. The reason that hospital plans are a great idea is that they will allow you to quickly receive medical attention when you need it the most. In many cases, you can’t wait for a hospital to see if you are going to get better before you can leave the hospital. Hospital plans will allow you to go to the hospital when you need to and not have to worry about leaving the hospital or waiting around to be seen by a specialist.
A hospital plan generally requires that you pay a monthly fee that would then pay for your procedures and treatments as an in-patient in a private hospital. Any doctor or prescribed medication from the hospital would then be for your private accounts. However, most comprehensive medical aid hospital plans would require you to also have a prescription list that would include any prescribed drugs that are part of your healthcare package. This ensures that you always have access to any prescribed drugs, even on an occasional basis.
Most comprehensive hospital plans cover the costs of medication that you have taken from a private medical establishment, such as a pharmacy or chemist. You will usually have an approved list of approved medical aids that you can use at the pharmacy. However, if your medication is not on this list then most comprehensive medical aid hospital plans will not cover it. So make sure you discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medication.
Profmed is one of South Africa’s leading providers of complete healthcare facilities, including hospital plans. Profmed has tailored its hospital plan offerings to meet the unique needs of South Africans. Many of their hospital plans include both in-hospital benefits and out-of-hospital benefits. The in-hospital benefits would include life support, critical care, dialysis, dental implants, orthopaedics, pain management, palliative care and respite care.
The core hospital plan offers cover for travel abroad, complementary therapies, hospital expenses in case of an emergency abroad and emergency medical assistance at an additional cost. This is known as Profmed medical aid. This helps to save money in the long term by reducing unnecessary medical bills. This is different from the private hospital insurance that Profmed offers as it is inclusive of all these services. However, some private hospitals do not offer Profmed medical aid.
Profmed does not cover any travel expenses for patients who are admitted to their in-house hospital or any out-of-hospital expenses. These include travel expenses to and from the patient’s home for hospitalization, transportation, meals, and other inpatient expenses. Patients can choose the services that they want; i.e. whether they want to have complementary therapies or dental implants.
